Using clean cooking stove is essential to fight global climate change and to reduce deforestation and environmental degradation.
Global Emissions
Cooking with polluting stoves produces one-quarter of the world’s black carbon emissions — the second largest contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide. Using safe and efficient stoves can reduce fuel use by 30–60% and significantly lower climate-damaging emissions.
Each year, 1 gigaton of carbon dioxide is emitted from burning wood — accounting for about 2% of global CO₂ emissions.
Black carbon is a major contributor to climate change. Its warming effect on the climate is estimated to be 460 to 1,500 times than that of carbon dioxide.
Biodiversity
Up to 34% of wood-based fuel is unsustainable, leading to forest degradation and contributing to climate change. Around 10 kilograms of wood are used to produce just 1 kilogram of charcoal, which is accelerating deforestation.
